✍🏻 Ten Things #84

Friends,
Every Ten Things is special but this one is even special-er. Why? Because today, I finally get to tell you about Run for Your Life.
About 18 months ago, when I was living in Sweden, I started interviewing some runners about...well, running. But not super fancy runners. Everyday runners, like you and me. And like Ken, the older gentleman in the picture up there ^.
I didn't want to put these interviews on the internet along with EVERYTHING ELSE that's on the internet. Instead, I wanted to make a magazine that you can touch and lend to friends and put in your toilet.
So I called up Tom and asked if he'd take some pictures of people. He liked the idea, and decided we should keep the magazine lycra-free. Then we asked Matt if he'd be up for designing a running magazine that doesn't really look like a running magazine. And he said yes.
Now we're here. With 11 stories of everyday runners, lots of photos, and a beautifully-designed magazine. All we need is for you to back the project on Kickstarter so that we can get the magazine printed.

Now, to the things.

1. Silicon Valley
Having worked at a bunch of startups, I put off watching Silicon Valley, fearing that it would do a poor job of representing the ridiculousness of startup life. But no. This show absolutely nails it.
2. Love
An awkwardly funny comedy, kind of a U.S. version of our 'Fleabag'. Currently my favourite lunchtime watch while I slurp noodle soup. (It's on Netflix.)
🎸
3. Gang of Youths – Go Farther in Lightness
Annabel and I saw these guys play in London a couple of months ago and it was a life-enriching experience – a positive, uplifting, raw rock show. Their new album channels all that goodness into a 16-track, 1 hour 17 minute (!) record. I love that they just do exactly what they want – even when that's writing an indulgent 7:33 opus.
4. Daniel Wilson – Sinner of the Week EP
What would we do without Discover Weekly? Probably never hear any new music. This week's discovery: the gorgeous electronic-tinged soul pop of Daniel Wilson.
5. Simian Ghost – Simian Ghost
Swedes sure know how to write a melody. Simian Ghost have an album full of 'em, wrapped up in super-catchy indie pop.

6. Bambino Volante
I met the creators of Bambino Volante a few months ago, while giving a talk about Kickstarter. They're reinventing the meaning of disability through the illustrated story of Pat, the Floating Boy. It looks so freaking good. Back it!
7. My Absolute Darling
After reading such high praise from Stephen King, I bought this on a whim last weekend then proceeded to devour most of it that day while on a train. It’s a majestically-written, terrifying, utterly electric story about an extraordinary teenage girl and her abusive father. Devastating and hopeful. Brutal and beautiful.

8. Notion
Nerds, take note. I've pretty much replaced both my to-do app (Trello) and note-taking app (Evernote) with one new, magical tool: Notion. If you're into this kind of thing, prepare to be transported to nerd heaven.

9. This is how your fear and outrage are being sold for profit
'As content producers compete for this type of affective engagement, this battle for attention creates what tech ethicist Tristan Harris has called “a race to the bottom of the brain stem.”'
10. 'Our minds can be hijacked': the tech insiders who fear a smartphone dystopia
'“Facebook and Google assert with merit that they are giving users what they want,” McNamee says. “The same can be said about tobacco companies and drug dealers.”'
